Training and tools for people like you
Why visit Tools of Science? One reason is to speed up your work. The gateway provides solid and growing pieces of information on service companies and core facilities in your vicinity and beyond. Another reason is to learn about events and news related to life science and drug development.
The gateway relies on two pillars; academic and industrial resources. In this way we hope to provide you with both tools and people along the entire value chain. Some of them you already knew existed and some of them you didn´t know about.
About Tools of Science
In order to stimulate collaboration and lay the foundation for innovations and an improved health-care in society, Tools of Science was developed in 2006. Tools of Science is a joint knowledge infrastructure initiated by researchers from both industry and academia and it is run by Stockholm Science City Foundation. The gateway brings together and displays research competence and advanced technologies from Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm University, Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital, as well as knowledge-intense services from companies from all over Sweden in the life science sector.
Find Academic Tools of Science
This part of the platform offers researchers within academia and industry with up to date and high quality core facilities, resources and competence from academia in a wide range of areas within life science. We believe that shared access to research facilitates enhances scientific productivity.
The information is updated at least once a year.
The academic Tools of Science are all categorised either as a core facility, equipment, a specific resource, or a course. In some cases, a tool functions both as a core facility and as a specific resource, and is therefore included in both categories. The tools are divided into a number of thematic areas such as; genomics and visualisation techniques. In some cases, a tool can be included in more than one thematic area to ensure that you will find what you are looking for.
Definition of Academic Tools of Science
The academic Tools of Science are defined as the ones belonging to Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, Uppsala University or Uppsala University Hospital. They are divided into the following four categories:
- Core Facility - A core facility offers technical and/or theoretical service to other scientists. Partial or complete services may be offered, depending on the facility. A core facility has a clear structure and can be used by other research groups based on a fixed fee. There are qualified personnel who serve clients, and the facility usually operates independently from the research group.
- Equipment - Equipment is available to other scientists, but no other service is offered. In many cases you must first show relevant skills to use the equipment.
- Specific technique - At a specific technique the research group is mainly interested in collaboration projects with other scientists, or may provide you with technical and/or theoretical advice in specific areas. The equipment is often especially advanced or rare. The group has specific competence in a unique area at the universities.
- Courses - Some facilities offer courses and workshops that may help you design your own experiments using the facility/resource in question.
Find Industrial Tools of Science
This part of the platform presents a complete list of all companies offering knowledge intense services to the life science industry and to academic researchers within life science. All Tools of Science members are listed first.
Definition of Industrial Tools of Science
The industrial Tools of Science present in this platform are defined as knowledge intensive service companies with specialist competence in life science, which have product developing companies within life science and/or academic life science researchers as customers. Both contract research companies and service companies are included, as long as they have personnel dedicated to and specialised in life science.
