Description:
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging technique used primarily in medical settings to produce high quality images of the inside of the human body. MRI is based on the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). MRI started out as a tomographic imaging technique, which produced an image of the NMR signal in a thin slice through the human body. MRI has advanced beyond a tomographic imaging technique to a volume imaging technique. Today different forms of functional information are extracted with MR.
As from June 2010, the MR Center at KI will house five human gantries, four of which is accessible to experimental research. One of these scanners will primarily be used for research purposes. This is an advanced and newly acquired 3.0 T, which means that higher quality scans can be carried out at a much faster speed than before.
The research work at the center comprises several important areas. The MR Research Center is one of the methodological platforms in Stockholm Brain Institute www.stockholmbrain.se .
Some of the major areas are:
 | Functional neuroimaging
 | Diffusion imaging
 | Imaging in multiple sclerosis
 | Stroke research and experimental ischemia
Suggestions of new areas are welcome.
The MR center provides service of technical nature to those in need of such services. The extent of service is negotiated on a per project basis. Hence, all research projects are prescreened for need of assistance and the fee for service is determined.
Infrastructure/methods:
The MR Center at KI houses five human gantries, with echo-planar and advanced spectroscopy ability. We also have major computational capacity in imaging.
More information about the facility is found on our website.
Practical information:
Proposals can be submitted with a short description to Martin Ingvar, MR Center, and should contain the following information:
 | Number of proposed studies
 | Description of patient material
 | Frequency of studies
 | Description of service need
 | A copy of the first page of Proposal to Ethical committee
 | Address for invoice.
On our web site there is a web booking system (subject to login) and information regarding various research fields at the MR Center and the PET Center.
