We are almost 1000 people, either employed or affiliated, who conduct research, educate and inform about the functioning of the brain - from a molecular level to a social perspective. Our work is highly integrated with the clinical organisations within the jurisdiction of Stockholm.

Karolinska Institutet is Sweden´s only pure Medical University and is a world-leading Institution. Our aim is to improve people´s health through research, education and provision of information. Within the Department of clinical neuroscience we achieve these goals through close interaction with patient clinics, and with focus on application of our research results directly into the healthcare environment.
We aim to bring patients and research closer together
We are currently almost 1000 persons, either employed or affiliated, who work to increase our subject-specific knowledge. We have close contact with patients and strive to enable them to benefit from our research findings as quickly as possible. Our strength and largest assets are our knowledge and competence within clinical neurosciences at all levels: professors, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, PhD students, senior and adjunct readers, laboratory and technical personnel as well as administrative personnel. We strive to run a professional workplace in all instances, actively working for gender and racial equality that enriches our operations.
Our research groups are central in our network
The heart of our organisation is the research groups. All other departmental activities are connected to these groups, in which everything happens: contact with patients, contact with students, research, education and dissemination of knowledge. As research for the most part requires international input, our research groups have a broad international presence. There is thereby a continuous exchange of experience and knowledge with researchers throughout the globe. We have four eminent foreign adjunct professors associated with our department as well as many guest researchers, and we are often invited to visit as guest researchers in other international institutions.
Leading research within important subject areas
We focus our operations within areas in which we have a clear international leading role or within areas we consider we have a leading national role in combination with a need for knowledge from society or the healthcare system. Relevant clinical problems often govern the specific research activities and many of our results have had significant effects in the clinic.
